dog training
Mrs Balmer Reviewed on 5th March, 2010

We have been taking our loopy chocolate labrador to training for 2 months now. At first we were nervous but really enjoyed the first class. Our dog absolutely loves the class and the improvement in her ( and our handling of her) is huge. In addition to her learning new commands it is also her behaviour around other dogs which has improved. Suzanne and Jen are very patient and helpful- always there to point us in the right direction.
We have now progressed to the advanced class and are looking foward to learning lots of new tricks. Roll on our exhibition at bleakholt!!

Dog Training (an owners perspective)
Mr Wild Reviewed on 25th February, 2010

Dog Training

Over the last five years I have experienced three different versions of dog training, I wouldn’t say any were bad but all were subtly different and some certainly more productive and fun than others. I think that the term “Dog Training” perhaps creates a misleading impression about what actually goes on at these sessions as in my experience it’s as much about training the owner as the dog. The main difference being that the dog gets lots of treats whereas the owner has to manage without (Suzanne and Jen please take note).

Anyway, having said the above, I suppose I better explain my own / initial experience of “Pendlebairn Pet Behaviour”; interestingly the company name does not mention dog training which is perhaps an indication that they also view the process as being about training the owner as well as dog (my words not theirs). I want to make it clear that this is my initial view as I have only attended about six classes so far despite joining back in November (Snow, Holidays and work accounting for the missed weeks).

I absolutely hated the first week and nearly didn’t return for week two. It was not really anything to do with the class or the trainers, I think more about me and how I felt about starting a new process with a new dog (had just lost my last dog suddenly), contending with an unruly mutt who just wanted to play, being on show in front of other people and perhaps that I was tired after a bad day at work and really wanted to be at ho home with a beer. Anyway I am pleased to say that I did go back and found that things were perhaps not quite as bad as I had built them up to be.

The training is very relaxed and all based around rewards for the dogs not the owners (basically lots of treats), if you are very busy or just lazy, these can be purchased on the night and consist of things that dogs seem to like such as pieces of sausage and chicken, as said above, no nice buns for the owners.

The classes are fairly small (I would say about 8 seems to be the maximum) and the exercises are rotated throughout the class to keep the dog / owners interested (I tend to lose interest very quickly, something I put down to being given insufficient treats of my own, it’s so unfair). Each week at least some of the exercises from the previous week are repeated but usually something new is also added. You are supposed to continue with the exercises during the week at home, the suggestion being about 15 minutes twice a day. This doesn’t sound much but it’s sometimes a challenge / chore to try and fit this in around work and walks but when I do manage to make the time, the results seem to show. Despite me not having as much time to spend as I would like, the results after only six sessions are clear to see, saying this, my monster periodically decides to be obstinate and difficult which can be really frustrating, especially in front of others, who's dogs always seem to be as good as gold (I tell myself that I chose a difficult breed).

Overall, I seem to be getting results and each session seems to be less traumatic than the last, in fact last week I even started to enjoy myself in an odd sort of way. We have now been told that we are to take part in a display team at the end of April and I am convinced that I will have the naughtiest dog on show, a fact confirmed yesterday as he ate a skirting board.

I suppose you want to know if I would recommend Pendlebairn to others, the answer is yes. The answer would also be yes to a question about do I prefer it to other “dog training” that I have undertaken in the past. Saying the above, if you want a very regimented / military style approach Pendlebaurn is not for you (well I don’t think it is, but who am I to say)

In summary:

It’s starting to become fun which is really important to me as I have little free time and don’t want to spend it on activities that I don’t enjoy.

I am beginning to see results despite not putting in as much time as I should (I have a week away with the monster on his own soon and will be using the time to try and progress his training and hopefully get to know him better). He’s going to become a star, either that or returned to the breeder for a refund.

People are friendly and helpful (trainers as well as other owners).

Jen and Suzanne seem to know their stuff (despite the lack of buns) and I am convinced that I will end up with a better and more rounded dog and he in turn may end up with a better and more understanding owner if I persevere with them.

If you are interested, the monster is now 6 months old (growing up very fast), weighs 25KG, has short grey fur, big floppy ears and amber eyes. No prizes for guessing what he is.
