About Us

Best Friends is owned and run by Jan Westby and offers all the help you need to learn about your dog and develop the skills to enable you to teach them how to be a happy, sociable, well-behaved,family pet and companion.
This is done through either small, friendly, group classes in both Low Moor in Bradford and Baildon or home visits for 1-1 training or help with problem behaviour.
All training is done using positive, reward-based, modern, kind, fun and effective methods based on a sound understanding of how dogs learn and develop. Punitive or coercive training is never part of the Best Friends approach as not only is this not necessary but it can actually be counter-productive to developing the great relationship we all want with our dogs.
Jan has been involved in Pet Dog Training since 1989. Believing firmly in training based on understanding of the dog and knowledge of the learning process, rather than the irrelevant and out-dated 'dominance'-based model, Jan is a founder member of and assessor for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt.co.uk); a member of the COAPE (Centre of Applied Pet Ethology) Association of Pet Behaviourists and Trainers (www.capbt.org) and holds their diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour and Training. She also has a Certificate for Teachers and Trainers of Adults and has worked as external training and behaviour consultant for the Leeds branches of the Dogs Trust and the RSPCA.
She lives in Bradford with her two dogs, Bruno and Paddy, both from the RSPCA.
